Graeco-Latin Language, Literature and Philology

The area of Graeco-Latin Language, Literature and Philology deals with research and teaching activities related to Greek and Latin literature and culture, from the beginning and, respectively, up to the Byzantine era and late antiquity. The main topics are: epic poetry and drama, rhetorical and philosophical prose, ancient and medieval commentaries, poetry's metre and structure, lexicography, interaction between literary genres. It investigates the textual transmission of the works, their reception and the historical debate about them, as related especially to drama and the evolution of the philological discipline. Such studies, based as they are on analysis of, and translation from, the texts in the original language, are carried out through several critical methodologies and theoretical approaches (anthropology, historical and cultural research, linguistics, palaeography, philology, pragmatics, stylistics).
