Learning outcomes

The course aims at analysing the development of the Italian artistic heritage between the Fifteenth and the Nineteenth century. The course examines works of art connected to the cultural context which relates to history and also to the personal relationships and believes of the author, as well as to the real meaning that the work has to express. Works of art are part of a large field, that could be named visual culture, that involves painting and sculpture, but also architecture and town-planning. The course is meant to introduce History of Modern art.

Contents of the course: From the Early Fifteenth century (Brunelleschi) to the Early Nineteenth century (Canova). The lessons will proceed through important artistic moments and phenomena.
Main subjects:
- Early Renaissance in Florence, Venice and Padua (Donatello, Brunelleschi, the Bellini, the Mantegna);
- the art in the courts of the Fifteenth century (Ferrara, Mantua, Urbino);
- Art in Florence ( Botticelli, Domenico Veneziano); Leonardo da Vinci;
- Art in the Papal Rome (Michelangelo, Rafael);
- Art in Venice (Giorgione);
- Classical architecture in the Sixteenth century (Andrea Palladio);
- Manner as an artistic ideal and many other subjects.

Preliminary section: short written test (3 questions pertaining painting, sculpture and architecture, to be answered in two hours). Students in the 4years-degree at the faculty of Arts and Humanities must attend both (i) and (p) courses. For those who wish to iterate the preliminary section, the professor will provid a list of readings.

The CD-ROM containing the main pictures discussed during the course remains the same of the precedent years and its examinable only in the computer room at the CIA (room T.9, first floor, Language Building).
