Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to provide the students with the method and the instruments for understanding the theatre as an aesthetic phenomenon and for the analysis of the performance with respect to the historical evolution of the theatre and to the cultural context, in particular during the 20th century.

Syllabus

The subject of the course is the aesthetic revolution of the theatre at the beginning of the 20th century, when the meaning of the performance, the pre-eminence of the text, the function of the actor are the theme of important discussions and of radically innovating ideas. A detailed investigation will concern the theories of Fuchs, Appia, Craig, Artaud and of the avant-garde movements, and the correlated stage experiments.
