Lesson timetable

Learning outcomes

The course concentrates on gaining expertise and analytical skills in the core areas of English linguistics, with special reference to variation and discourse. Attention will be dedicated to (a) the study of English from early manuscripts to internet English, (b) English for Specific Purposes and (c) Corpus Linguistics, bearing in mind the key role currently played by English as a global language.

Syllabus

Pre-requisites: Entry level required: B2 (post-intermediate), according to the European framework.

Contents:
- The history of English: Old English, Middle English, Early Modern English
- Modern English: grammatical trends and variety awareness
- World English(es)
- Varieties of discourse
- Focus on genres and textual types: news media, politics, advertising, science, law
- Studying English: the role of corpus linguistics
