Learning outcomes

to show that a large variety of hypotheses on the subterraean world emerged from natural history and geology in strict relation with other cultural domains (literature, philosophy) and visual culture

Syllabus

Programme: this course intends to explore the rise of a specific discipline, geology, from the web of historical sciences as a whole. The crucial role played by earth and life sciences from the 15th to the 19th century will be analised in connection with literature and visual culture.

Teaching methodology: traditional lecture and contributions by students.
