Learning outcomes

The course of Comparative Grammar of the Indo-European Languages gives an introduction in the study of the verbal system in ancient Indo-European languages in a diachronic perspective, particularly referring to Old Greek and Latin. The main aspects of the development of some verbal categories will be presented. The course describes the history and the comparison of the verbal system in Greek and Latin with those of the main ancient Indo-European languages. A description of the possible reconstruction of some verbal categories for the Proto-language will be done. Particular attention will be given to individual aspects of the category of the Middle.

Students should have already had classes in Introduzione allo studio del linguaggio/Introduction to Language Study LT and Glottologia/Linguistics (p)

Syllabus

The course of Comparative Grammar of the Indo-European Languages describes the history and the comparison of the verbal system in Greek and Latin referring to the systems of the main ancient Indo-European languages. A description of the possible reconstruction of some verbal categories for the Proto-language will be done. Particular attention will be given to individual aspects of the category of the Middle, both semantic and morphological.

Oral exam at the end of the course and presentation of a paper during the course; for working students a written assignment on a topic chosen with the help of the lecturer
