The aim is to show that the new science of ecology was forged in the late XIX century from a variety of discourses concerning nature in close relation with cultural domains such as religion, literature, philosophy, and economy.
This course intends to explore how a specific discipline devoted to the environment stemmed from the web of natural sciences, philosophy, and literature. The crucial role played by earth and life sciences in European culture from 15th to 20th century will be analyzed considering their fruitful relations with literature and visual culture.
