The course aims to analyze the main artistic expressions of Byzantine civilization, from the foundation of Constantinople until the fall of the Eastern Empire (IV-XV century).
The purpose is to identify the main aspects that distinguish the Byzantine art, developed into the Bosporus capital, but also the artistic languages present in the other regions of the empire.
The course will provide particular attention to artistic events, with evident Byzantine character, in the contemporary Western world.
The works of artin Byzantine territories will be investigated by chronological order, in according to the evolution of language in the eastern area: the early Byzantine era, from the founding of the capital to the revival of Justinian; the golden age of Byzantine art; the age of iconoclasm; the Macedonian Renaissance and the Comnenian phase; the late Byzantine era, from the reconquest of Constantinople to the end of the Palaeologi.
To ensure a correct approach to the phenomena of Byzantine art, it will be taken into consideration works of art executed in the main techniques, trying to identify their material, iconographic, stylisticcharacteristics.
There will be some visits to works of art related to the topics of the of the course.
The bibliography will be given during the course.
