Learning outcomes

The purpose of the course is to provide students with detailed knowledge of some specific phenomena related to the central centuries of the Middle Ages. Specifically, topics related to mature Romanesque art, with particular attention to the architecture of full-twelfth century, will be studied carefully.
During the lessons the major Italian and European monuments will be evaluated rigorously, as well as their role in transmitting new artistic knowledge.

Syllabus

The course will address the complex phenomenon of matures Romanesque architecture, through the most important European buildings, ranging from the mid-eleventh century and the second half of the twelfth. They the geographical and historical contexts will be identifies, specially related to the establishment of homogeneous languages and the ability to transmission of ideas within the most important religious buildings.
Alongside specific reflections on architecture will be also carried out detailed analyzes of the sculptural apparatus and the role of the liturgy in the definition of space.
