The course is aimed at offering to the students the basic tools for the historical and critical analysis of the theatrical performance and of its connection with the different social and cultural contexts in which it originates and develops. At the end of the course, students are supposed to be able to recognize and analyse the elements of theatrical performance (text, space, acting, music, stage design, light, costumes) in their mutual relationship and in the specific role they play in the different historical and geographical situations on which the programme is focused.
The course aims at analysing the interdipendence between socio-cultural contexts and theatrical forms in five crucial moments of the history of Western permormative arts: Greek tragedy, Italian Renaissance comedy, Elizabethan tragedy, eighteenth century drama, contemporary experimental theatre.
As regards the programme, stranger students are kindly requested to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course or at least one month before the exam.

The exam will verify the students' historical knowledge of the theatrical forms examined during the course and on the texts, and will check their skills to recognize and analyse the relationship between theatrical forms and their socio-cultural context.
