The Conservatory and the University promote a series of lectures entitled “Music/Cultures/Civilizations”: six one-hour events to discuss music in history, culture and society. Each year a different theme is chosen, explored by six scholars from a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives.

The title of the second edition is “The Music of Women”. The history of Western music is usually told as a story of “great men”. Women have a marginal place in this story, if they be mentioned at all. Women commissioned, composed and performed music regularly, but traditional music historiography has forgotten this active presence. “The Music of Women” intends to counter this narrative, inviting us instead to discover women’s musical practices from the Renaissance to the twentieth century, and to think about how such practices have (not) been narrated.
