The aim of the course is to improve the ability of independent analysis and develop a mature mastery of the critical tools of the discipline in relation to specific aspects of the history of modern art.
The course is for students of History of Modern Art and it is "monographic". The course deals with the philological aspects of specific themes and of maximum importance for modern art. Their investigation allows to examine their implications in other realities, such as those of peripheral centers. In this way the course can have as integral part some moments of study "in front of the artwork", with the direct intervention of the students.
The training intent is to recognize the primacy of the stylistic investigation of the work of art in its complexity, including the technical-executive one. The "contexts" and the iconographic and iconological contents will be studied, from the point of view of historical profile, and of philosophical, political and theological thought.
The program was conceived in the centenary year of Raphael's death and in conjunction with the exhibition dedicated to Giulio Romano in Mantua. The opportunity is offered to those specializing in the history of modern art to acquire the basic and specific notions on these leading figures of the modern manner and of mannerism. Concepts necessary to tackle the paths and new proposals offered in this regard by exhibitions and conferences organized in such circumstances with greater awareness and in a critical manner.
The educational objective is to favor the acquisition of knowledge and an analytical method useful for identifying and facing the most current research results offered by contingent initiatives.
The planned visits that the students have, the individual study and the exam method, both written, propose the occasion of a greater control of the aspects of the communication of the acquired knowledge.
A study day is scheduled in Mantua, half a day of study in Verona with a visit to the Cathedral and the church of Santo Stefano. Depending on the availability of the students, it will be possible to plan a study trip of two or three days in Rome.
The specific bibliography of the course will be indicated during the lessons and also published online. In this way it will be updated on the publications of the centenary year of Raphael's death. The texts indicated will be made available at the Replay copy shop.

In relation to the situation deriving from the Coronavirus emergency, the examination modality shown below is modified for the 2020 summer session, in accordance with the indications of the university, in oral exam with telematic mode [ZOOM].
The exam takes place in written form with five open questions (duration of the test 4 hours). Furthermore, the production of a short in-depth "essay" on a topic chosen from those presented in class is also planned. The topic must be agreed before the written test takes place. During the appeal the student can attach the "paper" to the written test; in this case he will have to present a short autograph abstract. At the student's choice the "paper" can be presented and discussed before the written test, in the form of an oral exam, whose grade will average with that of the subsequent written test.
Alternatively, students interested in participating in the study conference entitled Giulio Romano and the beginnings of the Commedia dell'Arte (Teatro Bibiena di Mantova, 20-21 February 2020) can agree on a report on one or more interventions as a "thesis" .
For attending students the reports held during the study visits will be evaluated for the final grade of the exam.
