The PROTEUS project is methodologically rooted in the belief that mythological tales are not just a specific way of telling stories on gods and heroes, but also, and principally, a potent tool capable of conveying and handing down models of thinking and patterns of behaviour particularly important for the cultures that devised, elaborated and transformed them over time. According to the scientific approach adopted by the research units, myths are considered essentially as conveyors of meaning: therefore, in PROTEUS they will be arranged thematically, and the placing of a myth in a certain thematic area of the database will follow from a cultural interpretation established by the research units.
Il progetto PROTEUS è metodologicamente radicato nella convinzione che i racconti mitologici non siano solo un modo specifico di raccontare storie su dei ed eroi, ma anche, e principalmente, un potente strumento in grado di trasmettere e tramandare modelli di pensiero e modelli di comportamento particolarmente importanti per le culture che li hanno ideati, elaborati e trasformati nel tempo. Secondo l'approccio scientifico adottato dalle unità di ricerca, i miti sono considerati essenzialmente come trasportatori di significato: pertanto, in PROTEUS saranno organizzati tematicamente e la collocazione di un mito in una certa area tematica del database dipenderà dall’interpretazione culturale proposta dalle unità di ricerca.
