The course aims at preparing the students with the basics of vegetal biology, with particular attention to organisms which provide the raw material that founds a cultural heritage and organism which interact in preserving cultural heritages. At the end of the course, the student will have acquaintance of main metabolic activities, variety of vegetal organisms and their organization level as well as a knowledge of the botanical analysis to be done on material that is culturally interesting: wooden artefacts, stoned works of art, historical gardens. During the course there’ll be references to some sections concerning botany applied to cultural heritages like: wood Anatomy, Xylotaxonomy, Dendrochronology and Palinology. Herbs as cultural heritage: herbariums, botanical gardens, gardens.
Contents of the course: - Basic concepts concerning self-trophy and hetero-trophy organisms, breathing and photosynthesis. General elements concerning organisms and their classification surfacing and sub-aerial life Gymnosperm and angiosperm: their growth and meaning in the gardens - Xylotaxonomy ways of dating wood - Exotic species Botanical analysis applied to cultural heritages.
