Learning outcomes

This course has two main goals: first, to investigate the media and technologies employed to fix and transmit music in the western world; second, to acquire the expertise and tools necessary to create music-related publications.


The first section of the course surveys the relationship between western music and the media, focusing on Medieval and Renaissance repertories (including the "invention" of ways of notating music, the diffusion of music books and their typologies, and the beginnings of music printing), and the audio-visual reproduction of such repertories. The second part of the course is devoted to the techniques and tools of present-day music-related publishing. Special attention is paid to multi-media resources related to the repertories discusses in the first part, focusing on a few recent audio-visual works of special interest. Further bibliography may be suggested during the course.
