Curriculum

Andrea Bianchini is PhD student in Ancient History and Archaeology at the University of Verona. He is mainly interested in classical historiography, with specific reference to Herodotus and Thucydidides' opera. More recently, he has been focusing on border studies and conflictual history, in order to apply ongoing antropological theories to classical studies. His master thesis, dealing with civil war in classical Greece, was granted the Clementina Gatti award  by Università degli studi di Milano in 2021.

The main aim of his phd project is to shed light on Herodotus’ understanding of borders and interconnectivity among different cultures. While former scholarship tended to consider borders as mere geographic limits, which shaped distinct spheres of influence, ongoing research adopts an anthropological perspective, considering the border as an area characterized by interconnectivity. Accordingly, borders should be analysed more as frontiers than boundaries, i.e. simple dividing lines. Building on this latter perspective, his research will investigate how Greeks and barbarians manage border relationships in a non-conflictual way, establishing economic and cultural networks in different area taken into account by Herodotus. To do so, the project will firstly identify separate contact areas (“espaces sociaux” –to cite Amselle), characterized by strong economic, social and religious interaction, which will analysed by means of a close-reading methodology.
