Learning outcomes

The course aims at analysing the development of the Italian artistic heritage between the Fifteenth and the Nineteenth century. The course examines works of art connected to the cultural context which relates to history and also to the personal relationships and believes of the author, as well as to the real meaning that the work has to express. Works of art are part of a large field, that could be named visual culture, that involves painting and sculpture, but also architecture and town-planning. The course is meant to introduce History of Modern art.

Syllabus

Contents of the course: The art of the Venetian Renaissance and Europe.
The course investigates the resumption of the ancient Classicism: this variance of the Renaissance was found in architecture, painting, and sculpture. The lecture analyses the reasons because which the Venetian Renaissance ( Titian, Lotto, Palma Vecchio, Veronese, Codussi, Palladio) had such a huge success in various parts of Europe. The course will respect the time-limit of the XVIth century.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral test.

NOTE: For the 4years-degree students at the faculty of Arts and Humanities. The students must attend both (i) and (p) courses. The professor provides a list of readings for those who wish to iterate the preliminary section.
