Attendance of the course “Introduzione allo studio del linguaggio”.
"Information structure at the syntax/prosody interface"
The course, which will be entirely held in English, will be focused on the study of Information Structure (IS), and in particular of how we process information
dividing it into given/new, salient/back-grounded etc. and express
these distinctions by linguistic means.
The study of IS, lying at the crossroads of major linguistic disciplines (syntax, prosody, semantics, discourse
theory, pragmatics), allows us to address several core
questions about language. In particular, IS studies can shed light on the architecture of grammar as they explore the complex relationships between its main components, i.e. syntax and prosody. As a result of the course, students will get acquainted with several foundational linguistic problems, conveniently illustrated with empirical (psycho-)linguistic data.
Teaching methods: Lectures
Written text (multiple choice / open questions), followed by oral examination.
