the aim is to show that a large variety of hypotheses on the nature of mountains emerged from early natural history in strict relation with other cultural domains such as religion, literature, philosophy, and visual culture.
Prerequisites: none.
Contents: this course intends to explore the rise of a specific discipline, geology, from the web of natural and historical sciences. The crucial role played by earth and life sciences in European culture from 15th to 19th century will be analised considering their fruitful relations with literature and visual culture.
