Learning outcomes

This course aims at introducing the participants to the core properties of semiotic processes, with respect to both natural language and other communication systems. Specific attention will be paid to the interface between semiotic and cognitive processes, to the notions of language and mind, to the relationship between cognitive neuroscience and human sciences and to the relationship between grammar and (linguistic) systems of interpretation. Issues of meaning will be addressed at both sentence- and text-level.

Syllabus

Main contents: (i) An introduction into some of the formal properties of semiotic processes: mind, consciousness and language in the neurocognitive sciences and in the philosophy of language; (ii) Some linguistic applications: a. elements of lexical semantics; b. lexicon, computation, interpretation; (iii) Some philosophical applications: the problem of the free will in an interdisciplinary perspective (with the analysis of some literary fragments from French novels).
