Learning outcomes

Module: MODULO II

The aim of the course is to make evident the connections between the contents of the mediaeval manuscripts and their readers. The choices of the sizes, shapes, materials, mise en page and decorative style are strongly related to the text, of course, but above all to the context in which the work was to circulate.
To exemplify these connections has chosen to present and analyze the books containing biblical texts. These types of books will be the focus of a broader discussion related to the transmission and circulation of sacred texts in the Middle Ages.


Module: MODULO I

The course aims at studying the bond between the religious world (monastic and conventual) and the written word: texts, manuscripts and libraries´structure will be studied from the ancient monastic culture to the conventual one.

Module: MODULO II

During the lessons, the different types of holy books will be observed to analyze the manufacturing technique and the different writings to understand in which way the Word finds its realization and become a symbol and a worship object, or the source for the liturgy, for preaching, for the comments and for theological studies, and so on.
The course includes the visits to some libraries for the observation and analysis of the different types of books.

The course will analyse texts, manuscripts, monastic and conventual libraries, to understand their structural diverities from the early Middle Ages to the 13th-15th century.
