Learning outcomes

The principle aims of this course is to give a deep knowledge of European history included between 1914 and 1945. Main focus is on IWW which is considered from different points of view: diplomatic, political, military, cultural and social, analysing its origin and its evolution in the different background of war. A great attention is given to the final phase of war (1917-18) and to the consequences produced in the different national context after the end of the conflict and the to the begining of the so called “thirty years’s war”.
At the end of this course, participants will be able to obtain a high level of knowledge regarding: a) principals historical phases of the period included between 1914 and 1945, b) most important events connected with nations’ s history involved in the conflict, c) historical processes produced by IWW, d) e) principals historiographical interpretations of these processes.



War and crisis of European democracy at the end of First World War

The first part of this course is dedicated to: the general questions connected with the diplomatic and political crisis that brought to the burst of war, the characteristic of the conflict , his development in the different backgrounf of war and to the political and cultural transformations produced by war in the short and long period.
Afterwards the course will focus his activity on these tooics:
- 1918: the final year of war
- The perception of catastrophe: artisti and novelists after the end of the war
- Post war: economy and society
- Post war: the triumph of mass
- Political violence and institutional crisis in Europe
- The origins of totalitarianisms.

Didactit modes
Frontal lessons, guided tour to museums and archives, projections of movies and documentaries. The partecipants can prepare brief paper to expose in class. The course will be accompanied by a seminar dedicated to the topics connected with the hisrity of IWW.

Assessment methods and criteria

Assessment methods and criteria

1. Exam is based on a oral text.
2.Students must demonstrate their capacity in using historical concepts and the appropriate language. They must also demonstrate their ability in the connection between different historical processes, both national and international.
3. Questions will be based on the most important topics discussed during the lessons and suggested in the literature.
4. Method of valuation: the vote is expressed in marks from 18 to 30/30.
