The course aims to provide the students with the basic tools and skills to independently design the cover of a book according to the canons of the contemporary publishing industry.
During the course will be illustrated the role of the cover in the current market situation, not only concerning stylistical and technical aspects, but marketing and communication as well.
In particular, will be analyzed the works and the creative methods of top of the notch designers such as Chip Kidd, Peter Mendelsund and Paul Buckley.
Moreover, students will be guided to get acquainted with the main aspects of creating a book jacket, starting from reading the manuscript and proceeding up to the graphic realization.
The exam will consist of four ongoing tests carried out during the course. Each test will consist in the creation of a cover for a novel previously assigned by the teacher. The teacher will comment and evaluate each project with a score from 0 to 10. The score will take into account for 40% the realization and for 60% the design. The overall evaluation of the works carried out during the course will comprise the final mark of the exam. More details and guidelines will be provided in class.
