Learning outcomes

The goal of the advanced course of Medieval History is to guide the student to critical analysis of historical sources and to develop his ability to analyze a historical problem in its complexity. The theme chosen is as follows: "Forms of government in the Italian city of the fourteenth and fifteenth century: the lordship".


The program will include the following topics:
- The interpretation of the Lordship in Italian twentieth-century historiography
- The crisis of municipal institutions and the birth of Lordship (two lessons)
- Continuity of municipal institutions (two lessons)
- Lords or tyrants?
- Legitimacy of the power
- The ecclesiastical policy of the Lords
- The documentation of the Lords (two lessons)
- The Lord and his Wife
- Urban politics of townships
- The economic policy of Lords
- Forms of propaganda
- From communal army to mercenaries
- From the lordship to the regional state.

The course will be partly carried out through traditional lectures, partly through workshops and in-depth lessons distributed on the computer platform.
Non-attending students will have to agree with the teacher a number of additional readings personally. Some of these readings will be taken from the volume "Town Halls in Municipalities in Italy, by J.C. Maire Vigueur, Rome 2013, others will be indicated to each non-attending student.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral examination. The student should be able to critically expose his opinion abour ome of the problems of the political, social, cultural and economic history of the Lordships in fourteenth century Italy. The evaluation will take into account written texts produced by students during the course.
