Learning outcomes

This course aims at introducing the participants to the study of some of the properties of semiotic processes within language and other cognitive systems. The focus will be on the interface between cognitive processes and semiosis, on the relation between language and mind and on the formal analyses of the use of language in communication contexts, including neo-Gricean and post-Gricean approaches. The main task is familiarizing participants to the analysis and management of the linguistic, textual and cultural processes that are responsible for the creation of meaning and the interpretation of signs. The study of the modes in which meaning is created and manifested represents an essential part of the academic skills of future experts in communication.

Syllabus

This course will consist of three parts:
(i) Formal properties of semiotic processes. Mind, language and consciousness in human sciences and cognitive neuroscience;
(ii) Cognitive and social determinants of some pragmatic aspects of linguistic meaning;
(iii) Textual analysis. The problem of free will from an interdisciplinary perspective (based on the critical discussion of some fragments from literary texts).
Parts (i) and (ii) will be based on classroom teaching and group discussion.
Part (iii) will involve the presentation of some 'case studies' that will provide a trigger for critical discussion.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam at the end of the course.
The questions will concern the three different parts of the course, and are intended to stimulate the participants to show their communication and judgment skills.
