Program

START DATE: 1 october 2018

UNWANTED. ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP AND THE RIGHT TO HAVE RIGHTS

“We became aware of the existence of a right to have rights […]
only when millions of people emerged who had lost and could not regain these rights because of the new global political situation" (Hannah Arendt, 1951)

The course will discuss Arendt's reflections about political inclusion and exclusion of stateless people and refugees, human rights, "the right to have rights" and citizenship.
The Program particularly refers to:
1) the history of western political thought and the political concept of citizenship (S. Petrucciani, D. Zolo);
2) Saskia Sassen's "Una sociologia della globalizzazione", a comprehensive analysis putting modern migrations into the historical and social context of globalization processes;
3) Hannah Arendt's "The declin of the nation-state and the end of the rights of men" (1951), the final chapter of "Imperialism" (second part of "The origins of totalitarianism") consacrated to the "right to have rights" as a right to active citizenship.
