Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this seminar students will be able to apply their competence in linguistic analysis to dialectal variation. They will also be able to recognize the importance of theoretical explanations for the development of grammatical norms.

Syllabus

We will focus on the relationship between standard languages and dialects or minority languages from a theoretical viewpoint. The endangered minority of the Cimbrians and their language will be described in detail. Phenomena like the so-called residual Verb Second will be analyzed. Classes will be held in English and/or German

Assessment methods and criteria

The students attending the course will be geiven to opportunity to write a short essay on one of the topics of the course. All other students will attend an oral exam
