L-FIL-LET/14 - CRITICAL COMPARATIVE LITERATURE
Period
Sem 2A dal Feb 17, 2020 al Mar 28, 2020.
Learning outcomes
The course aims to offer to the students a selection and an analysis of the essays published in the Western world during the 19th and the 20th century that were crucial in the construction of important critical methodologies.
Program
The course will offer a general overview of the studies of criticism and literary theory from the second half of the twentieth century to the new millennium. Starting from the theoretical cornerstones of formalism and structuralism, the course will focus in particular on the changes that have occurred in literary production following the advent of electromagnetic and digital technologies.
The following topics will be addressed during the course of the course:
- the mutation of the concept of literature between postmodernism and the new millennium;
- the basics of storytelling and the relationships between its three modes (narrative, exhibition, interactive);
- the genres and forms of intersemiotic translation;
- the problems posed by the hybridization of analogical and digital media;
- the contribution of neuroscience to the analysis of the narrative.
Assessment Methods and Criteria
The course will be based on a constant interplay of theoretical insights and analysis of individual texts to which the critical methodologies will be applied.
Consistently with the didactic methods of the course, the way of verifying learning will consist of an oral interview on the course bibliography.
The final vote, expressed in thirtieths, will be the result of the following elements:
- critical ability to analyse critical and creative texts;
- ability to use correctly the terminology related to the field of study;
- lexical appropriateness and argumentative ability.

Students will have to prepare the following texts for the exam:

Double Degree
The University of Verona, through a network of agreements with foreign universities, offers international courses that enable students to gain a Double/Joint degree at the time of graduation. Indeed, students enrolled in a Double/Joint degree programme will be able to obtain both the degree of the University of Verona and the degree issued by the Partner University abroad - where they are expected to attend part of the programme -, in the time it normally takes to gain a common Master’s degree. The institutions concerned shall ensure that both degrees are recognised in the two countries.
Places on these programmes are limited, and admissions and any applicable grants are subject to applicants being selected in a specific Call for applications.
The latest Call for applications for Double/Joint Degrees at the University of Verona is available now!
