Learning outcomes

The course is conceived as an introduction to philosophy of science. By the end of the course the student will be able

To orientate him/herself in the contemporary debates in philosophy of science
To discuss the main themes in the field of social studies of science
To distinguish between bad and good forms of scientific communication
To formulate critically philosophical arguments

Syllabus

Introduction to historical and social epistemology

Part A) Introduction to historical epistemology
In first part of the course I will introduce the main epistemological debates of the XX century such as: continuity vs discontinuity, internalism vs externalism, unity of science vs plurality of sciences. Furthermore, I will discuss the main protagonists of these debates.

Part B) Science, Technology, Society and problems of scientific communications
In the second part of the course, I will introduce the research field of Social Studies of Science and its major epistemological consequences. This will be carry out through the analysis of case studies of technoscientific controversies involving scientists (or experts) and their public. These discussions will allow as to clarify the relations between scientific knowledge and scientific information and the distinction between bad and good forms of scientific popularization.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written exam: test consisting of a questionnaire with open answers and/or multiple choice text. The students can choose to submit also a short essay about the topics discussed in the lectures (to be agreed with the instructor). The essay is worth 0 to 5 points on the final evaluation.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, and in accordance with the University of Verona guidelines, during ​the 2020 summer session the assessment modality will be modified as follows: online oral exam.
