Learning outcomes

Acquisition of a key historical interpretation of economic phenomena, which allows to grasp their complexity, as well as the interrelation between economic facts and those of an institutional and political nature, beyond purely theoretical interpretations.


This module focuses on the relationship between globalization and growth/development. Particularly, it examines the origins of globalization in the early modern period, and the role of international trade in the making of the global economy.
Main topics:
1. Growth and development in historical perspective.
2. Globalization as a historical process: from the origins to current times.
3. The origins of globalization in the early modern period.
4. The economic consequences of globalization in Europe.
5. The consequences of conquest in Latin America.
6. Africa and the slave trades.
7. Export-led development in northern America.
8. The consequences of globalization in Asia.

Assessment methods and criteria

Attending students:
- Written exam (60%) consisting of three types of questions: 5 questions with brief answer on fundamental concepts (2 points each); 2 questions with half-page answer on historiographical interpretations and/or comment on graph/table (5 points each); 1 larger question on the consequences of globalization in a specific area (10 points). The evaluation will take into account correctness of lexicon and economic reasoning, clarity and completeness.
- Group presentation (40%). The evaluation will take into account the material used (slides), clarity, capacity to illustrate graphs/tables and to discuss.
- Optional oral exam (+/- 10% of the grade).

Non-attending students: written exam according to the above-mentioned criteria (100%) and compulsory oral exam.
