He graduated in 1979 with a degree in Humanities from the Faculty of Humanities and Philosophy at the University of Rome La Sapienza, and after some work experience first in high school teaching and then at the Higher School of Public Administration, he served from 1984 to 1992 as a researcher of Latin Language and Literature at the Faculty of Education of the University of Cassino, and, after its transformation into the Faculty of Humanities, as an associate professor of Latin Grammar from 1992 to 2000 and as a full professor of Latin Language and Literature from 2000 to 2008. From 2008 to 2018 he was full professor of Classical Philology at the Department of Humanities of the University of Cassino and Lazio Meridionale and is currently full professor of Latin Language and Literature at the Department of Cultures and Civilizations of the University of Verona.
He has held numerous positions in the University of Cassino: President of the Bachelor of Arts (1995-2001), President of the Center for International Relations (1993-1997), Pro-rector delegate for External Relations and International Relations (1997-2001), Deputy Pro-rector (2001-2007), Dean of the Faculty of Humanities (2003-2007), member of the Board of Directors of the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio (1984-1988 and 2016-2018). He has also held numerous positions with the European Commission, the Ministry of Universities and various Italian and foreign universities on European cooperation programs and research program evaluation. He also collaborates with working groups of the University and Research Evaluation Agency. He has been deputy coordinator of the Evaluation Board of the Roma Tre University. From 2021 to 2024 he was member of the Board of Directors of the University of Verona and he is currently Head of the Department of Cultures and Civilizations at the University of Verona.
From 2014 to 2019 he was President of the University Council of Latin Studies; he is also Vice-President of the Center for Humanistic Studies 'Marcus Tullius Cicero of Arpino' and director of the Center's Scientific Committee. In 1991 he won the XXXII Certamen Capitolinum - youth section, for his edition of Macrobius' grammatical treatise. He is a member of the Institutional Committee of the Guarantors of Classical Culture at MIUR.
His scholarly interests are oriented on figures and themes of late Latinity, such as Macrobius, of whose treatise De verborum Graeci et Latini differentiis vel societatibus he edited a critical edition, and the late antique grammatical tradition, to which he has devoted works that have addressed modes of composition, characterization and manuscript tradition of minor grammatical works, such as the orthographic treatises of Capro and Agrecio and the Explanationes in Donatum. In this area, his work has been both oriented on the value of linguistic evidence that this minor production holds for the reconstruction of the evolution of Latin in the late period and on the modes of linguistic teaching and learning in the late antique school, with particular interest in the role of Cicero's works in grammatical teaching and on the early stages of the Catullus tradition.
Another field of interest was the personality of Horace and he collaborated for several years with the Institute of the Italian Encyclopedia for the publication of the Enciclopedia Oraziana, of which he was editor-in-chief from 1996 to 1998.
He coordinated a research project for the cataloguing of Latin manuscripts of grammatical content produced within the 11th century, and he was the Center for Studies, Research and Documentation 'Civilization of the Manuscript and Printed Book from Antiquity to the Renaissance' at the Department of Humanities at the University of Cassino; he was coordinator of the PhD program in 'Literary and Historical Sciences in the Digital Age' and coordinated several doctoral courses at the same University from 2008 to 2018. He has participated with his papers in numerous national and international conferences and has organized and directed several of them, including the 11th Course of the International School for the Study of Written Records at the Majorana Center in Erice, the annual Ciceronian Symposia organized in Arpino by the Centro Studi Umanistici di Arpino, of which he is Vice-President, the international seminar Books and Texts. Work in Progress in Cassino, and the International Conference Tra arcaismo e rinnovamento: l’erudizione di età antonina e la formazione del sapere tardo antico / Entre archaïsme et renouvellement: l’érudition à l’époque des Antonins et la formation du savoir tardoantique. Since 2024 he is member del Comité international pour l'étude du latin vulgaire et tardif.
