Short description of contents:
The text analyses the grammatical description and examples of the origin of the syntax theory, especially about clauses relations
Note:
In the twelfth century, grammars, commentaries, and glosses shared the same syntactical concerns of word order (ordo), the parts of speech and their reciprocal government (regimen). In more general terms, the syntax of written Latin, the vernaculars and of the glosses is characterised by the principle of constructio among those partes orationis. It cannot be denied that various mutual influences took place there. They concerned not only some logical notions which entered into grammatical treatises in the eleventh- and 10 twelfth-century, but also an increasing awareness of the independent status of grammar within the artes liberales. This fact had as consequence that in the grammars and commentaries up to the 12th century, knowledge and discussion on grammatical structures especially for phrases and clauses spread out, mirrored in the terminology, which moved together with people from France to England and from England to Italy. We argue that grammars from the 11th and 12th century became new disposals for syntactic descriptions and analyses, from which the questions arise which kind of syntactic relations they dealt with, and in which frame they could be properly described. This contribution aims at answering, first, the double question how the central concept of constructio is compatible with major syntactic structures such as phrases, clauses, sentences, and verb valency, and 20 which were their established roles in clause construction and classification, and second, what kind of clauses and under what denominations they were treated in the ME grammars. In fact, the Modistae were able to show that the government and the syntactic construction are necessarily part of the grammatical issues which represented the true and adequate principle through the modi significandi.
