Short description of contents:
This article attempts to shed some light into the scientific culture that was spreading in Trentino during the first half of the sixteenth century. Particular attention is devoted to the research carried out by Pietro Antonio Mattioli, the Tuscan botanist who became, in 1528, court physician of cardinal Bernardo Cles. His fifteen-year stay in Trentino played a crucial role in setting the stage of his career as a prominent European naturalist and was crucial for the development of a modern approach to botany and pharmacology
