My research interests impact a domain among linguistics, cognitive neuroscience and the philosophy of mind. They range over the history of logic, the study of quantification in natural language, the syntax and semantics of anaphoric dependencies, the syntax of reference of natural language, issues of language change and issues in Romance/Germanic comparative syntax and semantics.
In the last ten years, I investigated the relation between atypical language development (especially developmental dyslexia) and bilingualism, as well as the interface between language and other cognitive systems, especially perception. I am also currently involved in a research project on the syntax and the interpretation of non-standard negation in language, involving a theoretical, a psycholinguistic and a neurolinguisic component.
I organized many international workshops and I have been involved, at different levels, in the Master and PhD programs of some renowned European universities. I supervised many PhD research projects, in such different fields as comparative syntax and formal semantics, computational linguistics and communicative impairment. Moreover, I was a member of many PhD thesis committees in several countries. I also developed conjoined scientific programs at PhD-level with non-Italian universities, especially Utrecht University.
I participated in funded research projects on the origin of language, the production of the Blackwell Encyclopedia of Syntactic Case Studies (financed by the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies), the comparative syntax of noun-phrases in Bantu, Chinese and Romance (financed by the Dutch Research Council), long-distance syntactic dependencies and linguistic diversity (financed by the Italian Ministry of Education among the research projects of national interest (PRIN)), bilingualism and atypical linguistic development (Seventh European Research Framework (Cooperation), “Advancing the European Multilingual Experience”, financed in 2013 by the European Commission).
I have a high number of scientific contributions in international scientific journals and peer-reviewed volumes and I am in the Editorial Board of some leading international journals in linguistics (among which
Linguistic Inquiry); and I am acting as a reviewer for almost 20 scientific journals and internationally renowned publishers. I am also a reviewer for several grant-giving organizations, including the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research, the French National Research Agency, the Flemish Organization for Scientific Research and the Italian Agency for Research Projects of National Interest.
In 2017, I have been selected as a member of the
Academia Europaea.
