Curriculum

Fabio Saggioro is a medieval archaeologist. His research activities are mainly oriented to the study of medieval landscapes and to the methodological aspects of the discipline. He conducted excavations of medieval settlements and castles (Nogara, Illasi, Villafranca, Roncà, Rocca di Canossa) or coordinated territorial research (Eastern Garda, Veronese Plain, Brescia Plain, Lessinia) focusing on the formation of medieval landscapes, on the development of castles, as well as on the transition phases between the Roman age and the Middle Ages. Since 2014 he has coordinated the investigations on the archaeological site of San Benedetto di Leno (BS), a monastery founded by the Lombard king Desiderio and since 2016 the investigations in Val Bregaglia on the site of Piuro (SO). His interests are directed towards the analysis of medieval settlements and agricultural structures and the paleoenvironmental reconstruction of the landscape. He is interested in theoretical and methodological aspects, also linked to the repercussions of archeology in the sectors of tourism, urban and landscape planning (he is a member of the Regional Landscape Observatory). He was co-delegate of the Rector for the Transfer of knowledge and relations with the territory (2019-21), member of the Evaluation Unit of the ABA of Verona and of the Expert Evaluators Groups (GEV-ANVUR) for the VQR 15-19, as well as of the Board of the National Council of Post-Classical Archeologies.
An archaeological way to studying religions is proposed. The Roman Mithraism and funerary rituals, and medieval monastic life will be investigated in field campaigns and laboratory analyses in order to discover what they ate and used during rituals and cultic meals.
