Learning outcomes

Hiëronymus Bosch, a fantastic painter between the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
Hiëronymus Bosch was a netherlandish painter who lived between circa 1450 and 1516. In 2016 the 550. anniversary of his death will be recorded with a number of great exhibitions, not only in the Netherlands, but also in spain and Italy. Bosch is well known for his fantastic images, peopled by monsters, grotesque figures, and dream-like landscapes. In the course we will analyze the artist's figurative language, contextualizing it in his epoch, and we will study the artist's fortune, not just in the Netherlands but also in Spain and in Italy.

Syllabus

The course wil present a monography of Hiëronymus Bosch, including a variety of aspects, from "philology" to iconology, to historical contexts, and the extraordinary "fortune" of the artist. The course will include one excursion, to Venice, to study Bosch's original paintings and some "context".
