Learning outcomes

main art productions of the Byzantine civilization from the foundation of Costantinople to the end of the Oriental Empire (330-1453). The course aims at understanding the main aspects of Oriental Christian art with references to Oriental productions present in the Western contemporary world.

Syllabus

Contents of the course: The Byzantine art in its different periods (proto-Byzantine; golden age of the Byzantine art; iconoclastic controversies period; middle-Byzantine era; late Byzantine period). The course will also analyse some art works, by focusing on techniques, materials and styles.
