The iconographical/iconological method will be analyzed within a broad historiographical and methodological context, ranging from its nineteenth-century origins to the “crisis of methods” of the end of the last century. Among the scholars who will be discussed might be mentioned Emile Mâle, Jacob Burckhardt, Alois Riegl, Heinrich Wölfflin, Aby Warburg, Erwin Panofsky, Ernst Gombrich, Hans Belting, Eddy de Jongh, Eugenio Battisti, Michael Baxandall, Svetlana Alpers, and others, whose thought will be exemplified through their original writings. The aims and limits of the method will be demonstrated by analyzing a choice number of italian and european artworks. Some of these works will be analyzed during field trips/short travels.

The course initiates with a series of frontal lectures in which the material will be presented and in which the main concepts related to the method will be expounded. The second part of the course has more the character of a seminar, and will be dedicated to the concrete analysis of texts and artworks.

Texts will be indicated at the beginning of the course
