Learning outcomes

During ghe cours of History of Medieval Architecture (m) will be discussed specific issues concerning the vast theme of archiecture in the medieval time. More specifically, the intention is to investigate some aspects, that marked the western building activity, in the extraordinary season known as the proto Romanesque (X-XI century).
The intent of the course is to offer a broad overview about religious architecture, to understand some aspects of the flowery language in the time of recovery of the Roman building experience.

Syllabus

During the course will be evaluated some of the many variants of the Romanesque in the Italian and European regions; particular attention will be given, for example, to specific issues related to the plants of the buildings, the architectural form in accordance with the destination of the building, the walls variants, the plastic decorations and their function in the context of medieval society. It will be investigated the major European buildings, from the proto-Romanesque phase, to the first mature one in the XI century. The languages ​​adopted, for example, in the Rhineland, Saxony, in the central regions of France, Normandy, Languedoc, along the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela, will be compared with the peninsular area, from the Po Valley to the realms of south Italy.
During the course several study visits will be made.
