Learning outcomes

The course is aimed at providing a basic knwoledge and fundamental tools for the research activity in the field of the ancient Near Eastern history. To this aim the lessons will propose relevant case studies, illustrate methods and goals of the analysis according to various approaches and exemplify the use of documentary sources and secondary literature.

Syllabus

Assyria and the Mediterranean world: Assyrian imperial expansion in the west, contact areas in the Levant; diffusion and circulation of goods, objects, people, styles, and ideas from the Syro-Mesopotamian region to the eastern Mediterranean and Aegean areas.
Reference books: A. Invernizzi, Dal Tigri all’Eufrate, Firenze 2007; A.C. Gunter, Greek art and the Orient, Cambridge 2009. Additional bibliographical references and materials will be proposed during the lessons.
Methods: lectures, guided analysis of documents. Attendance is recommended; students who can not attend classes are kindly requested to contact the teacher.
