Learning outcomes

Language contact and contact induced language change: typological features

Introduction to the problem of language contact and to the theories which frame the phenomenon, illustrating aspects considered on three levels of linguistic analysis: phonetics, morphology and syntax. In the course also some phenomena of lexical borrowing and loan will be considered. Examples of change induced by contact will be displayed by considering some modern and ancient Indo-European languages.

- aspects of language contact considered on three levels of linguistic analysis:
- phonetics,
- morphology
- syntax.
- Phaenomena of lexical borrowing and loan
- Examples of change induced by contact will be displayed by considering some modern and ancient Indo-European languages.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam at the end of the course and presentation of a paper during the course; for working students a written assignment on a topic chosen with the help of the lecturer.
