The course aims at providing the students with an in-depth knowledge of Hieronymus Bosch, through a contextual research methodology, attentive to geography of art, collecting and artistic market between Flanders and Venice in the 16th century.
The course focuses on "Bosch and Venice", and develops in parallel with the homonymous exhibition at Palazzo Ducale, Venice.
Hieronymus Bosch is among the most enigmatic artists of the Netherlands around 1500. The convulsive pictorial world of his works, populated by strange and monstrous beings, is very far from the Italian artistic context, closer to a classicist culture. Yet the art of Bosch has received a particularly significant reception since the early 16th century in Spain and Italy. What are the reasons and the assumptions of this popularity, which occurs not only in various figurative contexts, but also in literary production, is a complicated problem still unsolved. During the lessons we will respond to this "paradox", through an accurate philological, iconological and contextual investigation.
The exam will be oral.
