Programma di ricerca dottorato
It is my intention to dedicate a PhD thesis to a survey on the metaphorical use of weaving, from its first appearances up to its re-employments in the Classical Period, by examining ancient Greek literary production from Homer to the fourth century B. C. The aim is to draw a coherent pattern of its usages in order to highlight the functions and significance of this metaphor through archaic and classical Greek culture, especially in the poetic and philosophic language of late fifth-fourth century B.C. authors, such as Athenian dramatists, Plato, the sophists and Attic orators.
At the beginning of Greek literature, the metaphor of weaving spans from the description of human destiny, intellectual activity and poetic creation (Homer, Hesiod, and the Lyricists) to its connotation as an organising principle of the κόσμος and human physical structure (e.g. Pherekydes, Parmenides and Empedokles).
Following this tradition, Athens’ cultural leaders inherit, re-organise and re-employ those metaphorical uses between the fifth and fourth century B.C. Plato, for instance, develops their full potential within his poeticized philosophic prose, appropriate for conveying highly complicated and elusive concepts to his public. An extended discussion on the metaphorical use of weaving in his corpus might highlight his particular way of appropriating poetic discourse diction and motifs. As many researchers have claimed, Plato appropriates several of the characteristic features of poetry and rhetoric in order to construct the identity of his own philosophical discourse. In fact, also dramatic authors contribute to the re-employment of this metaphor, as in the case of Aristophanes and Euripides, and I will take this further in a survey about its usages among dramatic authors of both comedy and tragedy. Therefore, a study on diffusion and different declinations of the metaphor of weaving in Athenian culture, might contribute to enlighten another aspect of the complex relationship between Plato and his competitors.

I am a PhD student in Classics at the University of Verona and Freiburg i.B. During my BA and MA career I developed great interest regarding the relationships between literary genres in Greek classical literature, especially between poetry, drama and platonic dialogue. I deal with the role of metaphor as communicative device, especially in scientific and philosophical language. Specifically, I study Plato's reemployment and reorganization of traditional literary devices - such as metaphor - so as to bring debatable concepts closer to the cognitive and sense-perceptive capabilities of the addressees of his dialogues.
