- This contribution focuses on the study of barbarism at the lexical level, in particular on the « foreign word barbarism », as transmitted to us by a number of treatises on barbarism and solecism. Through the testi- mony of ancient grammarians, we try to find possible traces of linguis- tic borrowing as well as elements of theoretical reflection on contact phenomena between the Greek language and foreign languages. A list can be drawn up of the few non-Greek words, identified as βαρβαρικά or ξενικά in Greek grammarians. This list, enriched by comments from lexicographers such as Hesychius, is analysed through the prism of reflection on contact between Greek and Anatolian languages or lan- guages attested in Anatolia between the 2nd and 1st millennia BC. Ex- amination of the examples highlights (and makes it possible to study) a number of theoretical and methodological problems which arise in the relationship between a certain ‘purity’ of the ideal language and the phenomena of linguistic exchange and contact in the real language.
