Abstract: It is well established that in his Oedipus at Colonus, Sophocles attempts to glorify Athens and its surrounding territories. In this paper I explore further the ideological implications of the play’s geographical elements. I argue that the play, by situating certain elements of the institutional history of Athens on the periphery, creates in the audience a sense of common affiliation, a sense important in the final years of the Peloponnesian War. In particular, I demonstrate, on the basis of several intertextual connections with the preceding literary tradition, that Sophocles recreates the countryside for celebratory purposes, by re–imagining the environs of Colonus, the ‘bulwark’ of Athens, a space that calls to mind urban landmarks, such as the Areopagus, and the values associated with this landmarks. Abstract: Nell’Edipo a Colono Sofocle mira, com’è noto, a una completa glorificazione di Atene e del territorio circostante. Si intende mettere qui in evidenza il carattere ideologico del messaggio veicolato dalla tragedia grazie ai suoi aspetti geografici e paesaggistici; l’autoreferenzialità territoriale e l’impressione che certi organismi della storia istituzionale ateniese risultino operanti allo stesso modo nelle zone periferiche sono indizi che fanno dell’ultimo dramma del V secolo un manifesto anche di autoreferenzialità politica dell’Attica durante gli anni conclusivi della guerra del Peloponneso. È forse possibile, inoltre, con una selezione di trame intertestuali, mostrare come attraverso il riuso della tradizione letteraria che lo precede Sofocle ricrei il paesaggio in funzione celebrativa, ricostituendo nei pressi di Colono, ‘baluardo’ di Atene, spazi che richiamano alla mente aree urbane (l’Areopago in special modo).
