- L’articolo intende esaminare la maniera in cui il tema della nascita del dio Dioniso è sviluppato in testi lirici e drammatici legati alle tendenze della cosiddetta “Nuova Musica”. Oggetto di indagine sono la tragedia di Euripide (in particolare Phoen. 648-54) e l’opera di Timoteo, che rappresentò in un ditirambo il parto di Semele (PMG fr. 792). Obiettivo del lavoro è quello di mostrare che nella produzione letteraria della seconda metà del V sec. a.C. l’inserzione della componente cultuale dionisiaca non è dettata da sentimento religioso ma piuttosto dall’esigenza di sperimentare, riplasmando e ripresentando elementi della tradizione in forme e funzioni totalmente nuove. This work investigates the possible ways of treatment of a traditional Dionysiac theme, the birth of Dionysus, in the literary production of the second half of the fifth century B.C. within the so- called New Music. In particular, object of analysis are passages from Euripides’ tragedy (Phoen. 648-54) and from the poetical production of Timotheus, who composed a dithyramb on the childbirth of Semele (PMG fr. 792). Through an examination of the texts under a linguistic, thematic and performative point of view, the aim is to point out that references to Dionysiac cult are not made in order to exhibit religious belief: the poets of the New Music intended to experiment and therefore they display traditional elements in forms and functions which are totally new.
