The exploration of the critical debate on the concept of tragic catharsis among Italian Classical philologists in the decades after the Italian unification shows different and at times contrasting elements. On the one hand, there were both a general delay in approaching the study of Aristotle’s Poetics and the poor reception of Jacob Bernays’ ‘medical’ interpretation; on the other hand, the enormous influence exercised by the aesthetic theories of Benedetto Croce built up the tendency to categorize catharsis as hedoné, identifying it as a form of aesthetic pleasure (see Terzaghi, Valmigli).
