I miei principali interessi di ricerca riguardano:
la linguistica storico-comparativa, - la tipologia linguistica, - l'antropologia linguistica
la filologia dei testi antichi del bacino del Mediterraneo e del Vicino Oriente antico
In particolare mi sono occupato delle lingue di scarsa attestazione o incompleta decifrazione nell'Anatolia del II e del I millennio, di testi multilingui, delle traduzioni antiche e delle loro teorie. Gli interessi propriamenti linguistici riguardano: l'allineamento sintattico, la struttura dell'informazione, la storia del pensiero linguistico, il metalinguaggio.
Un importante ruolo nelle mie ricerche ha la grammatologia, in particolare lo studio dei sistemi di scrittura antichi.

Indogermanische Grammatik
Il progetto prevede lo studio della sintassi delle lingue indoeuropee all'interno del progetto della nuova indogermanische Grammatik (edizioni Carl Winter Verlag). Il progetto è finanziato dalla fondazione Fritz von Thyssen ed è in collaborazione con l'Accademia delle Scienze di Vienna (Velizar Sadovski) e il gruppo di ricerca internazionale "Indogermanische Grammatik und Syntax" (coord. da Thomas Lindner, Univ. di Salisburgo).
LautSchrift&Sprache
Il gruppo internazionale si occupa di grafematica storica, epigrafia e storia delle scritture. Ha fondato la serie LautSchriftSprache | ScriptandSound, edita presso Reichert Verlag di Wiesbaden.
