Lesson timetable

Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide a high-level knowledge of the artistic production in Florence between 1430 and 1460.

Syllabus

Prerequisites: Basic-level knowledge of the History of italian art in the 15th Century.

Contents of course: The course will verify, twenty-five years later, the arguments of "Pittura di luce", a famous exhibition held in Florence (Casa Buonarroti) in 1990. The lectures, seminars and study visits will investigate the use of perspective, light and color in painting in Florence after the death of Masaccio: that is the cultural environment from which emerged Piero della Francesca. The most significant representative of this trend was Domenico Veneziano, but also Fra Angelico, Andrea del Castagno, Alesso Baldovinetti and others were involved, as some less famous painters, such as the Master of the Carrand Triptych and the Master of Pratovecchio.

Teaching methods: Lectures will be supported by: projections of slides; exercises in reading and interpretating images; a study trip to Florence.
